Crate Engines: The Complete Buyer’s Guide (2026)
This guide covers everything you need to decide which crate engine to buy, what it will actually cost once it is running, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost people the most money.
What Is a Crate Engine?
A crate engine is a complete, factory-assembled engine that ships to you ready to install, delivered in a wooden crate. The name is that literal. Instead of rebuilding a worn engine, sourcing parts from a dozen suppliers, and hoping the machine shop got the clearances right, you buy one assembled unit that has already been built and tested.
The appeal is straightforward:
- Predictable outcome. A rebuild is a discovery process. You open the engine, find the crank is scored, then find the block needs boring, then find the heads are cracked. The final bill is unknowable at the start. A crate engine has one price.
- Predictable timeline. A rebuild ties your car up for weeks or months. A crate engine arrives on a pallet.
- Warranty. A rebuild carries whatever your machine shop is willing to stand behind. A crate engine carries a manufacturer warranty.
- Known power. The engine was dyno-sheeted or built to a published specification. You know what you are getting before you buy.
The trade-off is that a crate engine is a fixed package. You are buying somebody else’s build decisions. That is exactly why choosing the right one matters so much, and why most of this guide is about matching the engine to your actual use rather than to the biggest horsepower figure you can afford.

The Four Levels of Completeness
This is the single most misunderstood part of buying a crate engine, and it is where most budget overruns begin. “Crate engine” is not one thing. It describes four quite different products at four quite different price points.
1. Short Block
The bottom end only: block, crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, rings, and main bearings. No cylinder heads, no camshaft in most cases, no valvetrain, no intake, no oil pan.
A short block is for someone who already has good heads and a cam they want to reuse, or who wants full control over the top-end specification. It is the cheapest entry point and the most expensive mistake if you did not realise how much you still had to buy.

2. Long Block
Everything in a short block, plus cylinder heads, camshaft, valvetrain, timing set, and usually the valve covers and oil pan. What is missing is the induction and accessories: intake manifold, carburettor or fuel injection, distributor or ignition control, water pump, alternator, exhaust manifolds, flywheel or flexplate.
A long block is the most common crate engine format and the best value for most builds, provided you are honest with yourself about what you still need to source.
3. Complete or “Dressed” Engine
A long block plus the induction and accessory drive: intake, carb or EFI, distributor, water pump, and often the pulleys and brackets. Add fuel, spark, exhaust and a way to bolt it to a transmission, and it runs.
Costs more up front. Almost always costs less overall, because the manufacturer has matched the cam to the intake to the carburettor. When you assemble a top end yourself from three different catalogues, you are the one responsible for whether those parts work together.
4. Turnkey / Engine and Transmission Combo
A complete engine, pre-run on a dyno, delivered with a matched transmission, torque converter, and often a wiring harness and ECU. This is the most expensive option and the least likely to go wrong.
For an engine swap into a chassis it never came in — an LS into a classic truck, a modern V8 into a street rod — a matched combination removes an enormous amount of risk. The engine, transmission and converter were selected to work together. See engine and transmission combos.

Before you compare prices between two suppliers, confirm you are comparing the same level. A long block that looks $1,200 cheaper than a complete engine is not cheaper if you then spend $2,000 on an intake, carburettor, distributor and water pump.
The Major Engine Families
Almost every crate engine on the market descends from one of a handful of engine families. Knowing which family you are in tells you what parts are available, what a swap will cost, and what the engine wants to be.
Small Block Chevy (SBC)
The 350 cubic inch (5.7 litre) small block is the most produced, most supported, most understood V8 in history. Parts are everywhere and they are cheap. A well-specified 350 makes 300–400 horsepower comfortably on pump fuel.
The 383 stroker is a 350 block fitted with a longer-stroke crankshaft (3.75″, from the 400) to produce 383 cubic inches. That extra displacement buys torque — the kind you feel from a standstill, which is what actually makes a street car enjoyable. For most street builds, a 383 is the better engine and the price difference over a 350 is modest.
LS Family (Gen III / Gen IV Chevrolet V8)
The LS is the default modern V8 swap and there are good reasons for it. All-aluminium options make it lighter than an old iron small block, the cylinder heads flow remarkably well from the factory, and it responds to modification with unusual honesty.

If you are planning forced induction, the iron-block truck engines are the value play — the bottom end tolerates boost that would hurt a lighter block. If you want naturally aspirated power and low weight, an LS3 is hard to beat.
Big Block Chevy (BBC)
454 and 502 cubic inch engines that make enormous torque and do not pretend otherwise. Heavy, thirsty, and exactly right for a heavy car, a truck, or anything that needs to pull. Wrong for a light car where the weight over the front axle will ruin the handling.
Ford Windsor and Coyote
The 302 (5.0L) and 351W are the Ford small block equivalents to the SBC — well supported, affordable, easy to work on. The modern Coyote 5.0L is Ford’s answer to the LS: overhead cams, superb heads, high-revving, and a more complex swap because of its physical width and its electronics.
Mopar
The Gen III HEMI, particularly the 6.4L (392), is a strong crate option for Mopar builds, and increasingly for anything where you want something that is not another LS.

How Much Horsepower Do You Actually Need?
This is where most people go wrong, and it is worth being blunt about it.
A 700 horsepower engine in a street car with stock brakes, stock suspension and a transmission rated for half that torque is not a fast car. It is an expensive car that is difficult to drive, unpleasant in traffic, and a genuine liability the first time you need to stop.
Horsepower is only useful if the rest of the car can carry it. Every additional 100 horsepower drags in more cost somewhere else: a stronger transmission, a better rear end, bigger brakes, better tyres, more cooling.

For a street car, torque matters more than peak horsepower. Peak power happens at one point on the tachometer. Torque is what you feel at every other point — pulling away from a light, overtaking, climbing a grade. An engine making 400 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm will feel dramatically faster on the road than one making 500 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, even though the second number sounds better.

Compression Ratio and Fuel: The Detail That Destroys Engines
If you take one technical point from this guide, take this one.
Compression ratio determines what fuel your engine requires. Run an engine on fuel with too low an octane rating for its compression and it will detonate — the fuel-air mixture ignites uncontrollably instead of burning in a controlled front. Detonation destroys pistons, ring lands and head gaskets. It does not take long.
As a working guide for a naturally aspirated street engine:

Two things shift these bands:
- Aluminium heads tolerate roughly half a point to a full point more compression than iron heads, because aluminium sheds heat from the combustion chamber faster and a cooler chamber is less prone to detonation.
- Camshaft timing changes effective compression. A long-duration cam bleeds off cylinder pressure at low rpm, which is why a race engine can run a static compression ratio that would destroy a mild street engine. This is also why you cannot simply swap a bigger cam into an engine and expect it to behave.
If you are planning a supercharger or turbocharger, you want low compression — typically 8.5:1 to 9.5:1. Boost adds cylinder pressure. Adding boost to a high-compression engine is a fast route to a broken one.
Check the compression ratio in the specification of any engine you are considering, and be honest about what fuel you will realistically put in it.
Carburettor or Fuel Injection?
Both work. They fail differently and they suit different owners.
Carburettor
- Cheaper to buy and to replace
- No electronics, no sensors, no ECU, no wiring harness
- Serviceable at the side of the road with hand tools
- Period-correct for a restoration, which matters for value on some cars
- Sensitive to altitude, temperature and weather — needs re-jetting when conditions change
- Harder cold starting; less efficient
Fuel Injection (EFI)
- Starts instantly, hot or cold, at any altitude
- Better fuel economy and cleaner emissions
- Self-tuning systems adapt automatically to conditions
- More expensive up front
- Requires a wiring harness, ECU, high-pressure fuel pump and a return-style fuel system
- Diagnosis requires a laptop, not a screwdriver
Practical guidance: if the car is a restoration where originality matters, run a carburettor. If it is a driver you want to start every morning and take on long trips, EFI is worth the extra cost and you will stop thinking about it. If you are doing an LS swap, EFI is essentially the point of the engine — do not fight it.
Retrofit EFI systems that bolt onto a standard four-barrel intake now exist and work well. They are a reasonable middle path.
What Your Crate Engine Does Not Include
This is the section that saves people money, so read it before you spend any.
Almost nobody budgets correctly for a crate engine, because they budget for the engine and not for the installation. Depending on which of the four levels you buy, some or all of the following are your problem:

Rule of thumb: budget 30–50% of the engine’s price again for everything needed to run it. On an engine swap into a chassis it never came in, that figure can reach 100%. It is better to know this now than to discover it with the engine sitting on a stand in your garage.

Matching a Transmission
The strongest engine in the world is a paperweight behind a transmission that cannot hold its torque. Transmission failure is one of the most common consequences of an engine upgrade, and it is entirely predictable.
The number that matters is torque, not horsepower. Torque is what twists the input shaft.

Two things worth stating plainly:
- Overdrive is not a luxury. A three-speed with a performance rear-end ratio will have your engine screaming at 3,500 rpm at highway speed. It is loud, thirsty and tiring. If you drive the car any distance, get an overdrive.
- The torque converter must match the camshaft. A converter with too low a stall speed behind a big cam makes the car feel gutless and lazy off the line, because the engine cannot reach the rpm where the cam works. This is a common, expensive and completely avoidable disappointment.

We will say this plainly even though we sell new engines: a used engine can be the right answer if you know how to inspect one, you can do the work yourself, and you can afford for it to be wrong. If any of those three is not true, the money you save is a loan against a future bill.
Remanufactured engines vary enormously by rebuilder. Ask what was replaced, what was reused, and what the warranty actually covers. “Remanufactured” is not a regulated term.
Will It Fit? Verifying Compatibility
An engine that will not fit is a very expensive object. Check these before you order, not after:
- Physical envelope. Width, height, and length. Overhead-cam engines like the Coyote are considerably wider than a pushrod V8 and will foul shock towers on chassis that never saw them.
- Bellhousing pattern. Does the engine bolt to your transmission? Chevrolet, Ford and Mopar patterns are not interchangeable, and even within a brand they change between generations.
- Motor mount locations. Standard mounts, or does this swap need a dedicated bracket kit?
- Oil pan and sump. Front-sump or rear-sump? A pan that fouls the crossmember or the steering rack stops the whole project.
- Exhaust routing. Will headers clear the steering shaft, the frame rails and the starter?
- Accessory drive. Will the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor clear the chassis and the radiator?
- Hood clearance. Tall intakes and superchargers do not always fit under a stock bonnet.

Warranty: What to Actually Look For
Warranty terms are where the real differences between suppliers show up, and they are worth reading before you buy rather than after something fails.
- Duration and mileage. Both. A warranty measured only in months is worth less than one measured in months and miles.
- Parts, or parts and labour? A parts-only warranty on an engine that has to come back out of the car leaves you paying for the expensive half.
- What voids it. Almost every crate engine warranty is void if you change the camshaft, add forced induction, or use nitrous. Some are void if you do not follow the break-in procedure exactly. Read this section.
- Who pays the freight? On a warranty claim, shipping an engine back is not a small number.
- Is it transferable? Relevant if you might sell the car.
- Documentation required. Many warranties require proof of correct oil, correct break-in, and a compatible torque converter. Keep receipts.

Shipping and Receiving a Crate Engine
An assembled V8 in a crate weighs 500–800 lb. This is freight, not parcel delivery, and it behaves differently.
- It arrives on a truck, on a pallet. The driver will not carry it into your garage.
- You need equipment. A forklift, a loading dock, or an engine hoist and several people. Arrange this before delivery day, not on it.
- Residential delivery costs more and usually requires a lift-gate. A commercial address with a dock is cheaper, and a local business will often accept it for you.
- Inspect before you sign. This is the important one. Photograph the crate on the truck. Look for crushed corners, punctures, a tilted or shifted load, and any sign of impact. If there is visible damage, note it on the delivery receipt before signing. Signing a clean receipt makes a freight damage claim very difficult to win afterwards.
- Do not discard the crate until the engine is installed and running. If you need to make a claim or return the engine, you will need it.

Break-In: Do Not Improvise This
How you treat a new engine in its first hour and its first 500 miles determines how long it lasts. This is not folklore. Piston rings seat against the cylinder walls under load in the early miles, and if they do not seat properly the engine will burn oil for the rest of its life.
Flat Tappet Camshaft
If your engine has a flat tappet cam — common in traditional small blocks and big blocks — the camshaft break-in is critical and there is no second attempt.
- Prime the oil system before first start.
- Start the engine and immediately bring it to 2,000–2,500 rpm. Vary the rpm within that band for 20–30 minutes. Do not let it idle. At idle there is not enough oil splash reaching the cam lobes, and a lobe can wipe in seconds.
- Use a break-in oil with a high ZDDP (zinc) content. Modern low-zinc oils are formulated for roller cams and catalytic converters, and they will not protect a flat tappet cam.
- Have everything ready before you start it — coolant in, timing roughly set, no leaks. You cannot pause halfway through to fix something.
Roller Camshaft
Roller cams do not require the high-rpm break-in ritual. The rings still do.
Ring Seating — First 500 Miles
- Vary the load and the rpm. Ring seating happens under changing cylinder pressure. Steady highway cruising is the worst thing you can do to a new engine.
- Accelerate moderately, then let off and let the engine brake. Repeat. Deceleration pulls oil up the bore and helps the rings bed.
- Do not labour it, do not rev it to the limiter, do not tow.
- No extended idling.
- Change the oil and filter at the interval your manufacturer specifies — often as early as 500 miles. The first oil carries the metal from the bedding-in process. Get it out of the engine.
Skipping break-in is one of the few ways to ruin a brand new engine in under a minute, and it voids most warranties. Follow the procedure supplied with your engine. If it did not come with one, ask before you turn the key.

The Six Most Expensive Mistakes
- Buying horsepower instead of torque. The engine that wins the argument on paper is often the one that is miserable to drive.
- Budgeting for the engine and not the installation. Add 30–50% for everything else. More on a swap.
- Mismatching the torque converter to the camshaft. Turns a fast engine into a lazy car.
- Leaving the transmission alone. More torque into an unchanged transmission is a countdown, not a plan.
- Reusing the old radiator. More power means more heat. Cooling is the most commonly under-specified system in the entire build.
- Rushing the break-in. Twenty minutes of impatience against the life of the engine.

- Which of the four levels am I buying — short block, long block, complete, or turnkey?
- Exactly what is included, and what am I still sourcing?
- What is the compression ratio, and what fuel does it require?
- Carburettor or EFI — and does that match how I will use this car?
- Will it physically fit? Bellhousing, mounts, oil pan, exhaust, accessories, hood.
- Can my transmission hold this engine’s torque?
- Is my torque converter matched to this camshaft?
- Can my brakes, rear end and suspension carry this power safely?
- Is my cooling system adequate for the new output?
- What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?
- What is the break-in procedure, and do I have the right oil?
- How is it shipping, and how am I getting it off the truck?
- What is my total budget, not just the engine price?
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a crate engine and a rebuilt engine?
A crate engine is assembled new, to a published specification, and shipped as a complete unit with a warranty. A rebuilt engine is an existing engine that has been disassembled, machined and reassembled, reusing whatever components were still serviceable. Crate engines cost more and carry far less uncertainty.
How long does a crate engine last?
A properly installed, correctly broken-in crate engine that is maintained and not abused should last as long as the original engine did — commonly well past 100,000 miles for a street engine. High-output performance engines built for maximum power have shorter service lives by design. The single biggest variable is not the engine. It is the installation and the break-in.
Do I need to change my transmission when I fit a crate engine?
If the new engine makes meaningfully more torque than the old one, yes — or at minimum the transmission needs to be built to handle it. Transmission failure after an engine upgrade is one of the most common and most predictable follow-on costs in the entire hobby.
Can I install a crate engine myself?
With mechanical experience, a hoist, a stand, proper tools and time, yes — many people do. Be realistic about the electrical work, particularly on an EFI engine, and about break-in, where a mistake is not recoverable. If you are unsure, the cost of professional installation is small next to the cost of a ruined engine.
What is a 383 stroker and is it better than a 350?
A 383 stroker is a 350 small block Chevy fitted with a longer-stroke crankshaft, giving 383 cubic inches instead of 350. The extra displacement produces more torque across the rev range. For a street car, most builders consider it the better engine, and the price premium over a 350 is modest.

Freight typically runs a few hundred dollars, driven by weight, distance, and whether the delivery is residential or commercial. A commercial address with a loading dock is meaningfully cheaper than a residential delivery requiring a lift-gate.

- Decide what the car is for. Not what sounds impressive. What you will actually do with it.
- Set a total budget, engine plus installation, and be honest about it.
- Choose the power level the rest of the car can support.
- Pick the engine family that fits your chassis, your parts availability and your budget.
- Verify it fits before you spend a cent.
- Buy the supporting parts at the same time as the engine, so nothing sits waiting on your garage floor.
Do it in that order and a crate engine is one of the most satisfying purchases in the hobby. Do it backwards — buy the biggest engine you can afford and work out the rest later — and it becomes the most frustrating.
