Deciding which engine to put in a C10 is the easy part of any C10 engine swap.

Getting it in, connected, cooled, fuelled and legal is where the project either finishes or sits under a tarp for three years.

Which Generation You Are Working On

Three C10 generations exist and they are not interchangeable for engine swap planning.

1960 to 1966. The earliest trucks. Front suspension changed during the run, with the earliest examples using torsion bars before coil springs arrived.

Tighter engine bay, in-cab fuel tank on most, and the thinnest aftermarket support of the three.

1967 to 1972. The Action Line trucks. Good engine bay access, excellent aftermarket support, and the generation most often given a serious engine.

Front drum brakes on many examples, and in-cab fuel tanks on the earlier years.

1973 to 1987. The square body. Roomiest engine bay, cheapest to buy, easiest to work on, and the fuel tank moved out of the cab.

If you are choosing a project rather than fixing one you own, this is the forgiving C10 engine swap.

Confirm the year before ordering anything. Mounts, crossmember position, steering box location and fuel tank position all vary, and each one changes the engine swap.

Two Routes for a C10 Engine Swap: Carbureted or LS

Almost every C10 engine swap is one of two projects, and they are very different amounts of work.

The carbureted route — a rebuilt 350 or a 383 stroker — needs no wiring, no ECU, no fuel injection pressure and no tuning.

Mechanical work only, and largely bolt-in on a truck that already had a V8.

The LS route brings modern fuel injection and better economy, and adds a wiring harness, an ECU, an EFI fuel system, an accessory drive decision and a tune.

If this is your first engine swap, the carbureted route finishes considerably more often. That is not a small consideration.

Motor Mounts and Frame Stands for a C10 Engine Swap

The C10 uses frame stands bolted to the frame, with motor mounts connecting the engine to them.

If your truck already had a V8, small block frame stands and mounts are usually in place and a small block or stroker bolts straight in.

If it had a straight six, the frame stands are different and must be changed. This catches people who assumed a V8 engine swap was a drop-in.

For an LS, the block’s mount bosses sit in a different position, so you need adapter mounts designed to locate an LS onto C10 frame stands. Good kits allow fore, aft and vertical adjustment.

That adjustability matters more than it sounds. A small movement decides whether the oil pan clears the crossmember and whether the headers clear the steering shaft.

Transmission, Crossmember and Driveshaft

Decide the transmission before you order the engine. In an engine swap it determines three other things.

Most original C10s came with a three-speed automatic or a manual and no overdrive. At highway speed with truck gearing that means high rpm, noise and poor economy.

Fitting a 4L60E or 4L80E adds an overdrive top gear and changes the truck more than the engine does. Our automatic transmission range covers both, and our transmission selection guide works through capacity and control.

The crossmember will almost certainly need to move. A 4L60E is longer than the three-speed it replaces, and a 4L80E is longer again and considerably bulkier. Tunnel work is routine on the earlier trucks.

The driveshaft length changes whenever the transmission does. Measure it with the engine and gearbox mounted in their final position, never before.

Shifter location changes too. A column-shift truck converting to a floor shifter needs the linkage and often a hole in the floor that is not there yet. Shifters covers the hardware.

The Oil Pan Clearance Problem

This is the single most common physical obstruction in a C10 engine swap.

The front crossmember sits where a deep front-sump oil pan wants to be. Truck LS engines come with exactly that pan.

Measure the clearance between the crossmember and the intended pan before the engine goes in.

It is the obstruction that stops more engine swap projects than any other. Discovering the conflict with the engine hanging from a hoist is a bad afternoon.

The usual solutions are a shallower swap-specific pan, or repositioning the engine slightly using the adjustment in a good mount kit.

Whichever pan you fit, the oil pickup tube must match its depth. A pickup that does not match will starve the engine and destroy it.

Headers and the Steering Box

The C10 steering box sits on the driver’s side, and it is the number one clearance conflict for an engine swap on this chassis.

Buy C10-specific headers. Generic small block or LS headers foul the steering shaft or the frame rail with tiresome regularity.

Cast manifolds are an underrated option. Truck exhaust manifolds clear many chassis, cost far less than headers, are quieter, and last indefinitely.

You give up some power. On a street truck you will not notice it.

Check clearance to the steering shaft, the frame rail, the brake booster and the starter before final assembly.

The starter is worth a specific mention. Header and starter conflicts are common, and mini starters exist precisely for this reason.

Cooling and the Radiator Support

More power means more heat, and a fifty-year-old radiator was sized for a fraction of what your engine swap will produce.

Fit a properly sized aluminium radiator with a shroud and electric fans.

A shroud roughly doubles a fan’s effectiveness, which is a straightforward consequence of how air moves through a core rather than a marketing claim.

Check inlet and outlet positions against your engine before ordering.

This matters especially on an LS, where the thermostat sits on the inlet side rather than the outlet, reversing hose routing compared with a small block.

The radiator support on these trucks limits how far forward the radiator can sit, and it also limits core thickness. Measure before ordering rather than after.

Fit an auxiliary transmission cooler at the same time. It is inexpensive, and heat is what kills automatics.

Fuel: The In-Cab Tank Question

This is the section that separates C10 planning from a generic engine swap guide.

Many 1960 to 1972 C10s carry the fuel tank inside the cab, behind the seat. That has two consequences.

Safety. A tank in the passenger compartment is a design nobody would choose today, and a great many builders relocate it to under the bed as part of a restoration.

EFI. Electronic fuel injection needs sustained high pressure and usually a return line. Building that around an in-cab tank is awkward and, given the safety point, is often the moment people decide to relocate.

A carbureted engine runs happily on the original low-pressure mechanical pump arrangement, which is one more reason the carbureted route is simpler on an early truck.

If you are going EFI, plan the fuel system as a complete job: tank, in-tank pump, feed and return lines, filter and regulator.

Do not improvise it. It is both a fire risk and a reliability problem you will chase forever.

Wiring, Gauges and the Speedometer Drive

Two things catch people in an engine swap here, and neither is the engine harness.

The speedometer drive. Original C10 speedometers are cable driven from the transmission.

A 4L60E or 4L80E uses an electronic vehicle speed sensor instead, so the original speedometer will not work without a converter or a replacement gauge.

Even on a mechanical transmission, changing the rear gear ratio or fitting overdrive alters speedometer calibration. Plan for it.

Gauges generally. Original temperature, oil pressure and fuel senders may not match a new engine’s sensors. Either fit matched senders or replace the cluster.

Original wiring on a truck of this age is frequently brittle, spliced and unlabelled.

If the harness is in poor condition, replacing it during a C10 engine swap is easier than diagnosing it later.

Exhaust

Everything from the collectors back is yours to sort out, and on a truck this is the most straightforward part of the engine swap.

Plan the routing before the headers go on. Steering shaft, crossmember, transmission crossmember and the rear axle all have to be cleared.

Decide single or dual early, since it affects the manifolds or headers you buy.

Brakes and Suspension

This is the part of an engine swap budget that gets deleted, and it is the part that should not be.

Brakes. Many 1960 to 1972 C10s have front drums. A significant power increase on drum brakes is a genuine safety problem, not a compromise.

Suspension. Stock C10 suspension was designed to carry load, not to control a modern power output. Suspension components and the wider chassis and suspension range cover the common upgrades.

Gearing. Adding overdrive changes what rear ratio makes sense. Differential and rear-end components covers a ratio change if you need one.

Steering. Extra front weight makes steering effort worse, and steering components covers the upgrades.

The Sequence of Work

Order matters in a C10 engine swap. Doing these out of sequence causes rework.

  1. Confirm the generation, existing engine and existing transmission. Establish what frame stands and crossmember you have.
  2. Choose engine and transmission together. Not engine first.
  3. Measure everything. Crossmember to pan clearance, tunnel width, radiator support depth, steering shaft path.
  4. Order the driveline and the mounts. Nothing else yet.
  5. Remove the old driveline. You will find things you did not plan for. Everyone does.
  6. Mock up the engine and transmission on the mounts, unbolted and adjustable, and check every clearance before committing.
  7. Fix crossmember position, then measure the driveshaft.
  8. Fit headers or manifolds and confirm steering, starter and booster clearance.
  9. Cooling and fuel systems, sized for the new engine.
  10. Wiring, gauges and speedometer.
  11. Exhaust from the collectors back.
  12. Brakes and suspension before the first proper drive, not after.
  13. Fluids, break-in, and a careful first start.

Step six is the one people skip. It is also the one that prevents most of the expensive surprises.

What This Realistically Takes

Two honest observations about engine swap timelines rather than a schedule.

The engine is a minority of the budget. On a full C10 engine swap, mounts, oil pan, headers, cooling, fuel, driveshaft, exhaust, brakes and suspension typically add up to more than the engine did.

The single biggest predictor of how long it takes is how complete your parts list was before you started.

A build with everything on the shelf moves steadily. One where parts are ordered as problems appear stalls for weeks at a time.

Common Mistakes

Starting a C10 engine swap by choosing the engine before the transmission. The gearbox decides crossmember, driveshaft, shifter and whether you get overdrive.

Assuming a V8 is a drop-in on a six-cylinder truck. Different frame stands.

Not checking oil pan clearance. The most common physical obstruction in this engine swap.

Buying generic headers. The steering box will find them.

Reusing the original radiator. It was sized for a much smaller output.

Ignoring the speedometer drive. An electronic transmission and a cable speedometer do not talk to each other.

Leaving the brakes alone. Double the power on the same drums is the mistake that hurts someone.

Measuring the driveshaft before the driveline is final. It will be wrong.

Confirm your generation, and choose the engine and transmission together. Measure the crossmember, the tunnel, the radiator support and the steering shaft path before you order anything.

Mock the driveline up before you commit to it, and measure the driveshaft last.

Then budget the brakes and suspension in the same conversation as the engine, because a fast truck that cannot stop is not a finished truck.

Will a V8 bolt into a six-cylinder C10? Not directly. The frame stands differ between six-cylinder and V8 trucks and must be changed. The engine itself is not the obstacle; the mounting hardware is.

Will my speedometer still work? Not if you fit an electronically controlled transmission such as a 4L60E, because the original speedometer is cable driven. You will need a signal converter or a replacement gauge. Changing rear gear ratio also affects calibration.
