What is three-phase power and why does my equipment need it? Three-phase delivers power over three alternating currents offset from one another, producing smoother, more efficient output for motors. Large motors — pivot irrigation drives, shop machinery, grain handling — are usually built for it because it lets them run smaller and cooler for the same work. Single-phase generators cannot run them.
