Why the Stainless Enclosure Matters

Most engine drives are painted sheet steel over an open frame. That is fine on a dry jobsite. It is not fine on a coastal build, a wastewater plant, a marine yard or anywhere the machine sits outside twelve months a year.

Stainless sides and roof do not rust through, and the fully enclosed case keeps rain, dust and grit off the engine instead of leaving it exposed. Three service doors mean you still get at everything for oil changes, filters and belts without pulling panels.

The enclosure is also what buys you the noise number. Full enclosure plus Lincoln’s sound design gives 76.4 dBA at 23 ft and 100.7 dB sound power at rated output. That is a meaningful difference on any site with a noise ordinance.

AC/DC Welding — What That Actually Buys You

This is the key spec that separates the Lincoln Ranger 250 GXT from most machines in its price bracket. It welds both AC and DC.

DC covers the everyday work: 7018, 6010 downhill pipe, 6011, general fabrication and repair.

AC output does two things DC cannot. It runs AC-only stick electrodes, and — with the optional TIG Module and a foot or hand Amptrol — it gives you proper AC TIG for aluminum and other alloys. If you need to TIG aluminum in the field, an AC-capable engine drive is the whole ballgame. DC-only machines simply cannot do it.

The unit is MIG and flux-cored capable with optional equipment, and it is remote ready out of the box with a 6-pin connector and a local/remote switch.

Rated output is 250 amps at 100% duty cycle on both AC and DC. There is no thermal cycling to wait out.

For best results on aluminum, budget for the TIG Module and Amptrol at the same time as the machine. Buying them later usually means a second freight charge.

10,000 Watts of Continuous Generator Power

Peak output is 11,000 watts single-phase for motor starting, with 10,000 watts continuous. That runs a plasma cutter, an inverter welder, site lighting, grinders and power tools — or serves as backup power for a building.

The 23 HP Kohler is a two-cylinder, four-cycle, overhead-valve, air-cooled engine with an electric fuel pump to stop vapor lock. The 12-gallon tank gives genuinely long run times between fills, and there is an electric fuel gauge on the control panel so you are not guessing. An oil drain extension makes servicing it a five-minute job instead of a contortion.

What does AC/DC welding mean, and do I need it? DC gives you a smoother, more stable arc and covers most rod types, which is why most engine drives are DC only. AC output lets you run AC-specific electrodes, helps with arc blow on magnetized steel, and — with the TIG Module — enables AC TIG for aluminum. If you never touch aluminum and never fight arc blow, DC only is fine and cheaper.

Can the Ranger 250 GXT TIG weld aluminum? Yes, with the optional TIG Module and either a foot or hand Amptrol. This is the main reason buyers pick it over higher-amperage DC-only machines.

What is the difference between the Ranger 250 GXT and the Ranger 305G? The 305G gives you more amps (305 vs 250) and multiprocess DC output at a lower price.
